In a recent study, it was found white farmers control 73% of arable land compared with 85% when apartheid ended in 1994. For these reasons and many more dating back to enactment of apartheid laws in 1948, where racial discrimination was institutionalized including the sanctioning of “white-only” jobs, white South African farmers will possibly be removed from their land. After a landslide vote in parliament, the country’s constitution is now likely to be amended to allow for the confiscation of white-owned land without compensation, following a motion brought by opposition leader Julius Malema. Their sentiments are that it is necessary to allow the people of South Africa the opportunity and access to the land they were denied dating as far back as 1894 without compensating the land that was taken from South Africans without consent or compensation.
