Police warns Ugandans of fake products flooding the market

Ugandan police have raised concerns over the increasing amount of fake products in the market after conducting an operation to weed out such products.

Referred to as ‘operation fagia’ (sweep), the process was launched after members of the business community cited counterfeit and duplicated goods swarming the market, thus affecting their businesses.

Interpol Uganda, Uganda National Bureau of Standards, Uganda Registration Bureau services and Anti-counterfeit network conducted the operation and confiscated the products including TV sets, pirated books, mattresses and others.

“There has been a problem of counterfeit goods on the market. Some made in Uganda and supplied in the neighbouring countries. This is one reason why we joined hands with various organisations, company owners and other stakeholders to fight this vice,” said the Director Interpol and International Relations in the Police, Fred Yiga.

The Director Legal and Corporate Affairs at Anti -Counterfeit Network, Fred Muwema not only advised brands to protect their customers from counterfeit goods, he also called for sensitisation of the public and customs officials on the same.
